This episode of Dark Culture Radio was recorded in about two hours. I really am getting better at this! In this show, I pay tribute to my sweetie Peter Murphy and play his entire Retrospective Tour set-list from start to finish. Runtime is a little over an hour and a half, so I apologize in advance to those of you with slow download speeds. I suggest you start your download before you go to bed tonight and in the morning, you’ll have lots of Murphy goodness to listen to. I’d actually like to hear from you guys about the run-time. Is an hour and a half too long? Perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad idea if future shows were this long? Let me know.

Just for fun, I threw in some live tracks and dance mixes. Enjoy! If you don’t, it means you have no soul and no heart. Also, make sure to check out the previous post which contains some iPhone pics from last night’s show.

Did You Know? You can also subscribe to Dark Culture Radio via iTunes and other podcast listening applications. Enter the URL: http://www.darkculture.net/podcast/dc_podcast.xml and you’re good to go!

Peter Murphy - House of Blues - June 5th

June 6th, 2008

You know when the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan show and the camera pans out to the crowd and the teenage girls are just going absolutely bonkers? That’s kind of what I felt like last night at the Peter Murphy concert.

Still getting over a wicked flu, I couldn’t miss Peter and bought a ticket. I’m trying to think of when I first discovered Peter Murphy. I discovered Bauhaus in 1987 - that would be 7th grade. I know this because when I was cleaning out my garage, I found my Junior High school folder and it had the word “Bowhouse” written on it. LOL. How embarrassing. I guess I didn’t really get into Peter’s solo stuff until Love Hysteria, which I recall knowing about, but not owning. I was poor, you see. I think a friend had it. The deal, however, wasn’t sealed until the single “Strange Kind of Love” came out in 1990. This song is one of two songs I recall hearing for the first time in my Dad’s van. Dad’s van, you see, had the only radio that picked up KROQ all the way from far off Los Angeles. I’d sit in the driver’s seat and listen to radio that barely came in. And through the fuzz and noise, I heard it. Oh, how I loved it. Shortly thereafter, I saw the video on MTV’s 120 Minutes (RIP) and that was it. I would love Peter Murphy for the rest of my life.

And I have. Every time I see him, I feel like a teenager. Last night at the show, I was dancing in the crowd, screaming my head off, waving my hands, and acting like a fanatic. Unfortunately, the crowd on the whole was pretty lame. I got there early and for a second I thought I’d shown up the wrong night. I sort of expected to see people I hadn’t seen in years, the old crowd, the old schoolers. Hardly. A mixed bag of old people and industry people. Slowly, but surely, the cool people flowed in and I felt a little safer. Still, it wasn’t half of what I expected. I couldn’t help but wonder why. I mean, back in the day, Peter Murphy was the end all be all. To Goths, he was our patron saint. So what happened and where was everyone? Or was that everyone, just older and fatter? It made me really sad. To think, here were all these older Goths, not Goth anymore, aging. So it made me feel old.

I’ve managed to maintain some semblance of Goth into my 30’s - which means I’ve already beat the system. I never looked at Goth as a “phase”. It was always something I belonged to and made part of who I am. Sure I hardly club anymore and I certainly don’t wear black lipstick anymore, but the fundamental elements of Goth are still very much a part of my life. I guess it’s not that way for a lot of people. Seems a lot of people use it as a temporary rebellion and then fade back into the crowd when they “get too old” for it. Oh well. Their loss. Losers.

As I momentarily step off my soap-box…Peter Murphy never-ever-in-a-million-years disappoints. He’s always good, he’s always sexy, and he always sings his heart out. There were a handful of people in the crowd that knew all the words to the songs and danced the way I danced. A couple next to me were zealous and joyful. We’d exchange glances and smiles knowing that no matter what, Peter was still our patron saint and always would be.

Look what my iPhone can do!

Kate Bush - Cloudbusting

March 27th, 2008

Featured on Kate Bush’s prolific 1985 release “Hounds of Love”, this song has gotten me though some tough times in my life. Even though it’s about a boy’s father being taken away by the government - which might also have something to do with the state of world post 1984 - I still find a certain comfort in it’s haunting melodies and the loneliness of it all; the rolling drums, the winding curves of the background vocals. I was ten when this LP came out and I wouldn’t discover Kate Bush for another couple of years. There was something mystical about Kate. She was beautiful and her voice sounded like a ghost child.

Bauhaus - Undone

I’m a firm believer that sharing is caring…except where, perhaps, STD’s are concerned. Music, on the other hand, is different. Unlike an STD, you can give it to someone and not feel so bad.

Today’s share is Bauhaus’ “Undone” from their newest release “Go Away White”. If you’re blindly biased about Bauhaus (the way I am), you’ll love it. If you’re a little more critical, soulless, and deaf in one ear, you might not enjoy it as much. Leave your comments and let me know what you think.

Brian on Drums for NIN

March 6th, 2008

drumkit.jpg

Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls was invited to perform drums on the latest NIN album Ghosts I-IV. Early on in the sessions, Trent Reznor asked Brian to create a junk drum kit out of household items (see image) and allowed him to go nuts, make stuff up, and be creative. I mean seriously, if Trent Reznor asked you to go nuts, make stuff up and be creative, wouldn’t you just die? Brian expressed in a recent Dresden Dolls newsletter that he was thrilled and honored for the experience.

About Ghosts I-IV: Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

..this confirms my theory that Trent Reznor is a lovable and curious android on a quest to become more human. Does he sleep or simply recharge his positronic brain? He’s done 7 studio albums, 4 remix albums, 3 live concert albums, and 20 singles in 18 years . He’s not human. Trent averages 0.7 new releases every year.

Chaos Erupts for Xymox in Mexico

March 6th, 2008

Clan of Xymox have released news that chaos, sabotage, and riotous behavior recently broke out at a concert in Mexico. Apparently, there were issues with the organizers, scheduling conflicts, and equipment sabotage. From what I read, several comments were posted in the CoX’s guestbook and the band was prompted to write out an explanation of the event.

Occurred at the Mandragora Fest in Mexico on March 1st. Initially, confusion began over scheduling conflicts which slated CoX to headline at 4am. Security and stage manager’s were lacking which caused a whole heap of mayhem throughout the night. During CoX’s set, the manager for a band called Atrocity allegedly “…displayed an atrocious ,despicable , unprofessional and self important behavior by pulling plugs and switching off the monitor system, causing Clan Of Xymox to have to leave the stage since there was no security on the side of the stage to keep these kind of people away.“. According to CoX, in support for this bad behavior, the audience began chanting “Clan of Xymox!!” and apparently, the audience unleashed their anger over missing CoX’s full set by throwing and yelling at the follow-up acts Atrocity and Leaves Eye.

The letter posted on CoX’s site is rather egotistical. I’m not exactly sure who wrote it, but it’s filled with a great deal of self love and claims that the audience in total was only there to see CoX and absolutely supported the band in the hours that followed the sabotage. I don’t know. I’ve been to a few large concerts in my day and when something goes wrong, you hardly ever know what’s really happening. At one point in the letter, it states “Ronny & Mojca displayed their dismay on stage about this sabotage and their fans picked up on it immediately by showing their support by shouting as loud as possible Xymox, Xymox, Xymox !!!

CoX have apologized for the mishaps and have expressed gratitude to their fans for their support.
